Variety Club Bash Rockdrill Championships

The WA Rockdrill Club had a great time hosting an impromptu Rockdrill Championship for the Variety Bash WA.  The Variety Bash came through Kalgoorlie on their ‘long way round’ trip on August 24th.  A few of the guys in the club got a drill set up and got the novelty competition going for the bashers. Everyone taking part in the amazing journey thought the WA outback raising funds and awareness for Variety the Children Charity got a chance to drill.

There was heated competition from all involved, a little bit of fixing ensured the all bribes taken went the charity once the  days business was done! There were some exemplary times from the novices and we may even see a few return for the Beacon Minerals Coolgardie Day 125th Celebration Rockdrill Championship!

The WA Rockdrill Club were proud to contribute $800 worth of bribes to the Variety Bash, thanks to club members Paul, Ian, Mick, Ross and Nick for ensure the bashers had a great day and thanks to Mariah Maher for the awesome photos!

Beacon Minerals Coolgardie Day 125th Celebration Rockdrill Championship!

Can you believe it our third rock drill event in Western Australia this year!! When once upon a time over 18 rock drills occurred through out the west in any given year we’ve now revived the 18 year break in this iconic event three years ago. Hosting and help out three Rock drill championships for 2017 has been a challenge for our small committee but one we are proud of!

WARDC Mangelsdorf Rockdrill Championship 2017 Results

9.30 am saw the start in the finest weather for the 2017 Mangelsdorf Rockdrill Championships held at the Cruickshank’s Sports arena. There was a strong crowd throughout the day and all drilling was conducted in the best spirit of competition. Drillers had come from as far afield as Telfer, Victoria and Tasmania.

Good news for the future with Michael Lee and Kaleb Cameron both improving their standing as the young guns Michael winning the Barminco Novice Drill and it won’t be long until these two start featuring in the Rocktech Singles final. Another highlight was the fact the first event filled with the allocated registrations, the Northern Star Jack and Jill. The crowd had the biggest roar for this final and seen the popularity of women competing increase.

Age and guile was the order of the day in the Rocktech Singles and HMR Pybar Doubles finals and those that made the least amount of mistakes where eventually chosen as the winner. From the final 8 in the single the competition heated up. Congrats to all who took part and to those who claimed the titles!

Rockdrill Club presents to AusIMM

Thanks to The AusIMM – Minerals Institute Kalgoorlie Branch for hosting the WA Rockdrill Clubs first presentation last night March 1st at the Iconic Hannans Club in Kalgoorlie! It was the best turn out this year for one of their talks with a diverse audience from WASM students, mine managers, engineers, metallurgists, geotechs to airlegging veterans and those involved with support services! Huge thanks to Rocktech Ground Support Installation for sponsoring the bar.

For us it was the first time outside of our events to directly engage with you all and share what we as a club do, learn about the history and identity surrounding Rock Drilling in Goldfields. In it’s peak there were over 4,000 airleggers working everyday across the goldfields and today there maybe a little as 30, as a mining method its threading water but there is still demand for this unique mining method!
